Today, we’re going to Brighton.

I went home and grabbed my Konica C35 and a roll of 35mm film. The Konica C35 is a compact 35mm rangefinder camera. This means that manual focusing is far more precise than it would be in a standard compact analogue camera and it the operation of the camera is near silent.

I have had this camera for well over a year but I never really used it, aside from the first roll of film that I used in it. The development of which yielded no amazing results, if only a couple of photographs for Facebook. I got the camera from Woods and Porter, a camera shop local to me that closed down. the journey to Brighton took around an hour and thankfully the weather held out till we got there. Whenever I go somewhere the weather is OK when I leave and generally gets worse the closer I get to my destination. It seems that my leaving the house and travelling any notable distance seems to summon a stratus cloud. In all fairness I never check the weather report for where I’m going but that’s beside the point and I seem to have digressed somewhat.

But I must say that arriving in Brighton with my girlfriend to be welcomed by a cloudless sky made me quite happy. The car parked, and a short(ish) walk later we found ourselves on the seafront. I would say beach but to me a beach has to have sand that you don’t have to dig for.

The Konica C35 camera is pretty much automatic in regards to metering. Focus is fully manual as is ISO selection. The camera displays what aperture and shutter speed it’s going to use in the viewfinder with an indication to over and under exposed shots. It’s a really nice camera to just take around with you, if you’re looking for a compact 35mm camera with control over focusing. With this post I have included eleven photographs, I can’t remember what film I used because I grabbed it and put in without making any sort of note, but it’s more than likely a Kodak Everyday film at ISO 200 (but that’s just a guess).

It’s currently 2:37am and I knew it would happen like this. Lately I haven’t really had the urge to write, I’ve tried believe me, with so much that I need to get done I had the desire to write but with no real urge to write. I tried a few times, but that just lead to a whole page of A4 being deleted and never seen again. So I kind of had a feeling that I would suddenly get the urge to write at a time where I should be considering sleep. Ah well, just glad to be able to write again.

In today’s post we have photographs from my younger brother’s gig that occurred a few weeks ago in all honesty, but it took me a while to get the film back. This isn’t the first time that I have photographed the Cardboard Cut-Outs, if you wish to see the photographs from the first gig of theirs that I photographed feel free to click here.

The photographs in this particular post were taken at R Bar in Gravesend, Kent and I thought that I would try and use the Olympus OM-10 and some black and white film like I did way back when I photographed Jason Olveira in Lewisham. There were a couple of problems though, firstly the highest rated black and white film that I could find was some ISO 400 Ilford HP5 film and my Olympus OM-10 decided to break.

My cameras don’t generally break so that was a major surprise, at first I thought it was the battery so I went a bought a new set and alas it was not the battery, the camera is just broken. So I used the Ilford HP5 in a different camera, my Canon EOS 3000 35mm film SLR. I haven’t really used this camera much before. I had got this camera from a charity shop in Bromley, if memory recalls, it also came in its box. So, we’ve solved the problem where I would be lacking a camera but alas we still had the issue with my film.

I really didn’t believe that ISO 400 would be enough, so I pushed the film. I rated the film in-camera at ISO 800 and wrote all over the canister in Sharpie so that whoever developed the film couldn’t be mistaken. The Canon EOS 3000 uses Canon EF lenses so I used the only two I had. The shots on this blog post were taken with wither a Canon EF 28mm f1.8 lens or a Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens. You may notice that this blog post is a bit video heavy. The two videos at the top are from the Cardboard Cut-Outs gigs (the top being the first and the bottom being the second) and the video under the photographs is just a short one that I found on my computer that has nothing at all really to do with this blog post. There are eleven photographs and if you’ve been reading the post up to now you will realise that they are all in black and white.

There are a few more blog posts coming up, another gig post, a wedding and a few more. I have been busy recently, I’m going to go to sleep now, but, hopefully this ability to actually sit down and write will carry on into tomorrow and I’ll be able to delve into those short scripts I slightly abandoned. I photographed a wedding on the 6th of August as I had mentioned in previous posts. Going through all those photographs multiple times does take some time and I would like to say that the photographs will be going up later in the week I just need to word the post that will go with them. I handed over the photographs on Monday and the couple (Tim and Suzanne Jones) were very pleased with the results, which made me quite happy.

Also on Monday I started as a Voluntary Teacher’s Assistant for a week long Illustration course at Camden Summer University. I’m only a few days in as I write this but I am enjoying it so much. One of the main reasons I went for this was to know for certain whether teaching would be a good career path for me and I have to say I really think it suits me.

As well as the wedding post, I am also trying to write a post about a park I found  on a walk through St. Albans last week. The photographs were taken on a compact camera as that was all that I had on me at the time so the quality won’t really match the rest of the blog but the photographs are nice all the same, and with that I’ll be putting a video with it also, so I guess I’m editing that as well.

I still haven’t completed my wedding portfolio that I mentioned in the last update (February Update) and with the wedding I just photographed and the possible weddings that I have got from that it may be a while before that’s completed. Everything else that I mentioned in the update came about really, I went to the Wedding Talk and I also started doing Video which you may have noticed if you pay attention to the blog on a regular basis. Half used films would usually happen from when I would take the camera out for a specific event and then completely forget to take an adequate amount of photographs.

I found around 25 films in total and I thought that I could make it a regular feature. I find waiting for the photographs to come out one of the interesting aspects of film photography. So when it comes to handing in a film without even knowing whether anything has come out at all I find getting the result quite exciting. When it comes to actually getting these films processed I generally opt to get the film developed without getting any prints made. This is mainly because I haven’t a clue how many (if any) photographs are actually on the roll of film and if I were to pay to get prints as well, it would prove to be quite expensive in the end. This is especially true if the films only yield one or two shots.

For our first instalment I’m going to use what must be the most recent of films. This film was first started in Meopham a few weeks ago on some Kodak Everyday ISO 200 35mm film (I seem to have a surplus of ISO 200 film at the moment). The photographs aren’t all from the same day, this is mainly due to what I said earlier, I take along a thirty-six exposure film and manage to take only ten shots. This leads to a variety of photographs when it finally gets processed. The photographs were taken on a Belomo Villia; a simple 35mm point and shoot camera. I received this camera as a gift some time ago and I’ve not used it as much as I should have.

I have just noticed whilst scanning the film, that the name of the film changes halfway through. It goes from Kodak Everyday ISO 200 to Jessops Diamond film.

So hopefully this can be the start of a new series of blog post showing photos from moments past and forgotten. It should provide a wealth of material as I have quite a few rolls still to get processed.

Photographing a wedding is always a big deal and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you have been chosen to photograph someone’s wedding day they have entrusted you with the responsibility of their special day. A once in a lifetime event that cannot be repeated, I mean you’ve heard it all before, but imagine having your equipment fail because you hadn’t pre-checked it, shrugging and going home. I’d be very surprised if you managed to get another wedding for some time.

Pre-wedding day every photographer (that I know) has their own ritual, their own way of preparing for the monumental task at hand. But, I don’t know their rituals so I can only give you mine and my ritual generally starts about a week (or more) before the actual wedding day.

Now, by ritual, I don’t mean meeting with the bride and groom and deciding on a pre-set photo list. That should have been done weeks or better yet months before the actual wedding day. No, in today’s post what I mean by ritual could otherwise be described as the checking over of all equipment that you tend to use on the wedding day.

Now I find that I am never really satisfied with just sitting in my home using the camera for a few shots and giving it all the a-OK. I’m just a bit more picky than that. With my equipment I like to go over everything and the only real way I know to do that would be to go  out and take photographs, mainly portraits. Because you want to see how the lens/camera/memory card/etc reacts to real world use. So what I do is arrange meet ups with people I know and give them free portraits for the chance to help me test out my equipment.

As well as helping me test my equipment it also gives me something to write about on this blog and I can also get enough footage from my camera to make a video. Today’s video (which should be above) is more of a video blog from my day than anything which you’ll learn from, but you may enjoy it. Even though I am taking portraits of friends of mine at the time I am more focused (if you’ll excuse the pun) on what my camera is doing.

First off, it’s best to check that the auto focus is working correctly (you would be surprised how often it isn’t). When that has been checked I then check the lens on manual focus,  just to make sure that the focusing ring doesn’t get stuck at any point and if it feels a little stiff then it’s best to know this before the wedding day. Once I’ve taken few shots with one lens I then switch over to another and start all over again. Today I was testing out the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and the Canon EF 28mm f1.8, I was especially eager to test out the Sigma as I had only received it back from repair a few days ago and I needed to make sure that it was working correctly. Like I said earlier, you should test every piece of kit that you are going to be using on the day. I am probably going to also be using my Canon EF 50mm f1.8 and I’ll definitely be using my Canon flashgun so I’ll test those out on my next portrait shoot which will probably be next week.

It’s not just about the lens either; you have to keep an eye on your camera. Just after taking the photograph I’m keeping a mental note of how fast the images are being saved. A fast memory card is a must with Wedding Photography. I generally don’t keep an eye on the battery, this is because two days before the wedding day I charge all my batteries.

So, as I said earlier in today’s post we have Tommi sitting in for me and all the photographs below were taken with the Canon EF 28mm f1.8 except for the first one. I wouldn’t expect portfolio quality shots from today’s post but I am still happy with the results, also, the shots were taken pretty much whenever I remembered that I had a camera on me.

Just before a wedding I tend to doubt my abilities and add that to the fact that I haven’t done any photography recently means that these tests are far more beneficial that usual. Oh, expect some gig shots in about three weeks, just saying.

Each post was generally written in one go, with some taking a bit longer. There are about 53 posts on the blog (not including this one) and seeming that I am not a writer by any measure I’m quite surprised that I managed to write that much. Photography is a passion, it’s my passion, it’s what I do and what I’m known for. From time to time I try to write and that’s the main reason that the posts on the blog have progressively increased in size since I started this blog all the way back in August of 2009.

But I’m not done yet.

Earlier on today I was looking at photography jobs and saw a role taking photographs in a theatre. On the job post it said to send a CV and a link to a website/blog and as I added the link to this site and I realised that I had not placed a post on here since photographing my younger brother’s band on the 15^th of May. This calls for two things, the first is a short apology for the lack of posts I’m not sure if this blog had regular readers but I can guess that no posts may have been annoying. Secondly, a return to blogging, photography, writing, videos and such.

And so we begin.

Out of context, today’s photographs, and the video for that matter will seem kind of strange. If you skipped the text of today’s post you will have seen shots of empty hallways and photographs of people laying down on the floor taken at a very high ISO. Saying that, I have to say that the video is kind of dark but if does give a great explanation of the monochrome images and the context with which they should be taken in. So, I shall begin to explain the first set of photographs.

First off, the photographs of the empty hallways do have some meaning to them. They were taken in the St. Phillips building in Alwych which is on the campus of the London School of Economics. And the reason that you find photographs of empty hallways and gutted rooms in this post is because St. Phillips had been emptied out prior to it being handed over. This handing over will ultimately result in this building being demolished. Work on which, has started long before I wrote this post. The reason for this I place to taking so long to write this particular post.

There are certainly a few things to be said about a building that is going to be demolished. The first of which that pops into the mind of quite a few people is simply “Who cares?” and I can understand what they mean. A city, like London, is never actually finished. It will continue to grow and evolve over time and there will be never be a point when nothing new is needed. But that shouldn’t mean that when a building is set to disappear we should ignore the history of that particular building. And that is what the exhibition that inhabited the St’ Phillips building shortly before it’s handing over was trying to convey.

I was thinking about this viewpoint on construction and deconstruction as I was walking [and photographing] my way through the empty hallways. But a couple of other thoughts were going through my mind. These thoughts mainly occurred when I was looking out of the third floor window.

“No one will ever see this exact view ever again. No one will see what I can now see and no-one will be able to stand here and see what I can’t either”

A certain view at a certain time can inspire quite a lot in people and it just kind of struck me that this building wouldn’t have that opportunity to inspire in the future. And that’s what I meant when I said that no-one will be able to see what I can’t. I look down and see a street; someone else could have looked down and wrote a novel.

I came to this by accident really. I had met one of the exhibitors, Jesse Darling, last year and I have had her as a Twitter contact for some time. I had asked whether or not she had anything that she wanted photographed and it was then that I was told about this exhibition and through that I learned a lot about the history of the building.

The exhibition “Students, Patients, Paupers” wished to celebrate the history and the many roles played by the St. Phillips building. Some of which include a venereal hospital, a work house and a dentist’s practice among others. These are but a few of the roles this building has performed over the past century.

I was there on Wednesday the 11^th of May where as well as Jesse Darling’s exhibition piece “Live Sleeping Event” there was also a public symposium going over the history of the building and the idea of construction and deconstruction.

Like I mentioned above, I am not a writer. A good example of which is this post, that I’ve been trying to write this since May. This building has a rich history and an interesting one. But, for some reason I find it hard to write about empty hallways, except to say, that a lot of history has passed through them. But I don’t just want to give you a history lesson. But for now, I shall simply show you the photographs and the video, before I break right through the thousand word barrier without having said very much.

Any band that I have photographed in the past knows that I love to do gig shots in monochrome. This is mainly because, through experience, I have found that venues tend to want to create an atmosphere and this usually is achieved through the use of awkward-to-photograph-with lighting. If it isn’t constantly changing colour it’s a colour that the white balance doesn’t know how to cope with. If you have found yourself in this situation then you will also know that manually adjusting the white balance hardly ever works. There are obviously ways around this, an external flash gun for example. But I really hate using flash guns if I can help it.

Another thing to add is that when it comes to gig photos I like to do it all manual, like I used to do with my film cameras. Part of it is guess work, but a big part is being able to step back and look at where you want to photograph and knowing what your exposure should be. One of my hidden talents is that I’m pretty good at guessing exposures at ISO 400 [even going again the advice of a light meter at times]. So when you’re on ISO 1600 it’s just a case of maths.

I had been thinking the other day that it had been some time since I had taken any gig photos and a little while later my younger brother told me about a gig that he and his friend Dave were doing on Friday the 13^th of May.

I had first started doing gig photography by contacting bands that enjoyed the sound of if they wanted any photos taken at an upcoming gig. This was usually done through Myspace, back when I had one. And then there were my friends that were musicians and I would attend their gigs and take photos accordingly, always loving the challenge of manual photography in such a hectic lighting set-up. This isn’t the first set of gig photos that I am placing on this blog. Click the photo links below to be taken through to my other music related posts on this blog.

Although the shots of Jason were taken with an Olympus OM-10 film SLR, the photos taken at the Adventure Starts Tomorrow gig and in today’s post and all were taken on the Canon EOS 50D using a combination of lenses. This camera was used at the request of my younger brother. This was mainly because he wanted to learn more about RAW photography with the shots.

The gig itself went really well, even though it was on Friday the 13^th. The boys went through some brilliant covers, clips of which can be found in the video embedded above. I suggest giving it a view, also at the very end of it my younger brother and I do a recital of the PokeRap. Which I’m sure has swayed all of you. One more thing, one of the hardest things to do in gig photography in my opinion is taking photos of the drummer, they are usually in the back with little to no lighting and they generally move around the most.

Before I get a tweet or comment on this post stating that I am focusing way too much on the topic of Street Photography I would like to point out that these photographs were taken on the 12^th of April using my Rolleiflex TLR and the photographs taken in the post previous to this were taken on the 21^st of April on the Polaroid 600SE. So I’m not lingering on a subject, I just had to wait a fortnight for the 120 E6 film to be processed.

I think it looks better than just a text hyperlink. Now, if you had been paying attention you will have read that for this post I am using my Rolleiflex Twin Lens Reflex camera. My camera from the 1930’s that takes 120 film. And yes it’s the same camera that I had used in the Pisa post.

As you may or may not know [depending on how often you read my blog] I am always looking to improve on where I feel that I am lacking. Hence the sudden arrival of all the videos to accompany the posts, anyhow, one thing that I’ve never really been that great at was street photography. Anyone who knows me will know that I have no problem with striking up a conversation with someone I have never met before [a habit I am sure will get me into trouble one day] but before taking someone’s photograph I feel the need to get to know them first.

For example, there is a blog post on here with photographs of my friend Azita, and as always, the link to that post is below. Now, I had met Azita for the very first time that day. This had happened because she had been referred to me by my friend Steve, who I have also taken photos of that are on this blog and yes there will be a link. And even though that was the first time we had met we still had a coffee [well, hot chocolate] at Starbucks first to chat for a bit and get to know each other which I feel improved the photographs.

Now, what about WEDDINGS you ask? Obviously I don’t know every person in the wedding party yet I am able to go along to the church or registry office and take their photographs. That is a very good point but when they go to a wedding they expect their photograph to be taken, to be remembered as part of that particular couple’s special day. But when you take that person away from the wedding scenario and put them in the everyday I doubt that they are prepared at all times to have their photograph taken and not feel strange about it.

The video at the top of the post shows a short clip of the busker who is the subject of a few of the shots below. This video came about for two reasons. The first was the couple that you will see thoroughly enjoying the lady’s singing and the second reason is because upon noticing the couple and how happy they looked I was midway through changing a roll of film. So making a video seemed the quickest option available to me. And may I add, I think that it works well as a video, much better than it would have done as a still image.

The shots below were taken on Fujifilm Provia that expired in 2005 and although I am usually quite lucky with the results I achieve from expired film this was not one of those times. But I decided against editing the colour and tone of the shots. I generally dislike editing to begin with. And although the video is of the busker there are other shots of people on the South Bank enjoying the day. Hopefully you will enjoy the shots. There are six images in total, all of them taken on the South Bank in London.

If you are a regular reader of this blog or just a casual passer-by, by looking at a few of the posts that are on here you can no doubt surmise that I have a few rare cameras. A few of them I can’t really use because you can’t get the film for them, but there are ways around that. Click the link to the previous post to find out.

One of my favourite of these cameras is my Polaroid 600SE. It’s not the easiest of cameras to carry around with you, one good example for this can be seen when I have to separate the camera and lens to fit it into my bag. Add to that that I had to take a light metre [due to the camera’s lack of an internal exposure metre], a couple of notepads, pencil and the HD camera for the video. So as you can imagine my bag was pretty heavy. Oh and before I forget to mention, in the video above I give a quick ‘how to’ on using the Polaroid 600SE and things to remember as well.

The camera itself was quite hard to find with a lot of people on eBay either selling it for way too much in my opinion or without lenses, which makes it useless to me. I found myself calling around a large group of local photographic shops at first and then expanding my search. And that’s when I found one at a camera store called Mr Cad [link below] at their Croydon branch.

I got the camera body itself at a slightly reduced rate because of a slight dent on the top but aside from that the camera works perfectly. I have used the Polaroid 600SE is one other blog post and that was my portrait session with Holly Defroand.

Actually the photos that I took of Holly were actually taken on the day I bought the camera, getting a lift from Mr Cad to the train station and making my way to central London. If you have clicked the link it may be obvious that it is only the top image that was taken with the Polaroid 600SE and that’s because that was the image that I was actually proud of from that day that was taken with the Polaroid 600Se the rest were taken with the Canon EOS 50D.

On this particular photo trip [the one that this post is about] I was joined in London by Tom Giddings and Heather Torrance. Both of which had their own individual photographic equipment and all three of us had our own techniques that we were trying out. These are explained in detail in the video which is above. Street Photography. Now although I have always thought that Street Photography has always lent itself to film photography but it’s somewhat hard to feel inconspicuous when you are holding a Polaroid 600SE as it is pretty big but I feel that with some of the black and white shots that I managed to get some good ones, especially the one of the two old men.

All of the photographs in this post, if you haven’t guessed it, were taken with the Polaroid 600SE. The colour shots were taken with Fuji FP-100C Instant Peel-Apart film and the monochrome shots were taken Fuji FP-100B Instant Peel-Apart film. I used one pack of each. One pack should in theory give you about ten exposures but the majority of my Fuji Peel-Apart film expired in 2005 so photographs are never really guaranteed. Also, the day before I went up to London I found a Polaroid film back with five shots remaining in it and decided to get through those. So on this trip I had five colour shots and ten black and white shots. I am including eleven shots in this post with the majority of them being taken on the Fuji FP-100B monochrome film.

Also a little note, I digitally edited one of the shots, the first shot below had a black mark on it that I decided ruined the shot somewhat. Also, below I have put the links that I said I would include in the video.

The camera loaded, the plan set, we were on our way. The journey to Brighton seemed to take less time than the one to Dover but I could be mistaken. We got to Brighton and for some reason decided to park a 15min walk away from the seafront. Parking a distance away from where we wished to be meant that after walking for some time we thought it best to move the car to avoid paying quite a bit for parking. One of things that we did was try to find a post office, this was for another project that I am up to. The details and results of this mystery project I will post about when it’s completed.

You may be wondering why I decided to use a camera that was made in the 1930’s that you can’t even get the film for and the answer for that particular question is simple, and the answer is one I can give for the majority of my actions: Because I hadn’t done so before.

The film that this particular camera takes [as the name of the camera suggests] is called 620 film. Which can easily be mistaken for 120 film as they are a similar size. When I first bought this camera I only really glanced at it and assumed that it took 120 film and I had already got home when I tried a film and noticed it didn’t work. This camera was produced from 1934-1938 making it quite possibly my oldest camera. I have a Rolleiflex Twin Lens Reflex [TLR] that was make in 1936 [I think] which takes 120 film that I have used on this blog before [as always, the link is below]. Now the TLR takes 120 film and even though it is quite old works perfectly and can even be connected up to a modern studio set up, which I will hopefully be doing sometime this week.

Whilst in Brighton I did look around for some cheap electrical tape to plug up the red exposure window but I couldn’t find any so I settled on the stamp which is also how the camera got its name, The Rising Cost Of Postage. Firstly, the reason I wanted cheap electrical tape was so that when it was peeled of it didn’t take any of the camera off with it and secondly I tend to give my cameras stupid names at times. The Holgaroid that I made was in its 4^th rework when I got some OK photos out of it. OK in that they were exposed correctly, it still didn’t focus. And due to the blurriness and the fact I mainly used black and white Fuji peel apart film in it [Fujifilm FP-100B], I named it ‘The Sweeping Shadow Camera Four’ [link below].

Experimental Photography | Self Made Holgaroid

Now as with anything experimental, photography or otherwise, you cannot expect good results on the first go and I did make some mistakes this first time. I didn’t wind the film on enough so a lot of the images are over exposed and the stamp wasn’t as opaque as I had originally hoped. A couple of days afterwards I went and got the film cross processed and looked at the results. Now as I had said in the video I know it was going to be an issue when it came to scanning and as it turns out, with my scanner it wasn’t actually possible. If you look at the image below you can see the set up I had to make in order to get the photos to my computer. I taped the film to the light and photographed it with the Sigma 18-50mm lens at 50mm and then once I had got it onto my computer I inverted the colours and cropped the image. Even though it was slide film that I had used, getting it cross processed meant that it had become a colour negative.

Now as you can see in the video, the Kodak wasn’t the only camera I had taken, I had also taken the Canon EOS 50 just in case. And below you’ll find a few photographs from the day in Brighton taken on the Canon EOS 50D and a combination of the Canon EF 28mm f1.8 lens and the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens.

And now you can see the images produced with Kodak Six-20 Junior Brownie. In case you didn’t catch it on the video the film I used was Fuji Velvia 35mm ISO 100.
