Portraiture Photography | Andy Say

This post is the first in a two part set of blog posts where Andy is the model. The first part that you see here will comprise of photographs taken with a digital camera and the second post will consist of photographs taken with a film camera. I expect the photographs from the film camera to be ready in a few weeks as they were taken on Kodachrome 64 film, the details of which I will reserve for that particular blog post.

In these photographs I wanted to emulate the style of a fashion shoot in a men’s fashion magazine. Andy, the model, requested that the shots have graffiti in them. So after a little research on graffiti walls close by before the shoot I found the address for a legal graffiti wall that was quite close to where I live. Though, to get to the wall did require a trip over the river.

I had known about this legal graffiti wall for years and had visited it in the past as a personal photo project that I didn’t complete. And although I didn’t complete the photo project, it did give me a good idea for the quality of the work that was on show there. I didn’t want to take the portraits and have nonsense graffiti in the background. I had only really remembered where it was after doing a few sketches for the shoot.

The photos in this post were taken with a Canon EOS 50D and the Sigma 18-50mm. Earlier in the day the rain was falling pretty heavily in my area and because the area for the shoot wasn’t too far away I was afraid that I would have to cancel. But, luckily, the rain stopped and the sun started to peer through the clouds as we arrived at the destination.

The shoot took about two hours if I remember correctly and whilst Andy went back to his car for a costume change I spoke to a couple of guy doing some graffiti at the time and they allowed me to photograph them whilst they were working. I found this quite beneficial as I could use the photographs for a blog post in the future.

But all in all I feel that the shot went really well and I was very lucky with the weather. In this post I have included 14 images and as I have mentioned beforehand in the post all the shots were taken with the Canon EOS 50D in Essex.

    He has a nice smile.
The second picture from the top is my favorite. I love that he’s seperated from the background. Yet it still ties in together nicely. The bold Graffiti and his black suit really mesh together, but he stands out. Nice touch!
